Renovating a bathroom can bring a fresh and inviting energy into a home. It goes beyond enhancing functionality; it also elevates the aesthetic appeal and resale value of a home. Recently, we took on the task of revitalizing a dated bathroom. Our goal was to create a space that felt modern while harmonizing with existing features like a well-maintained tile floor. From crafting a stylish board and batten wall to updating outdated fixtures, the renovation resulted in a stunning bathroom that perfectly captured our client’s vision.

Assessing the Existing Space

Before starting the renovation, we conducted a careful assessment of the bathroom's layout and features. The bathroom was fitted with dated elements, including an old shower liner that detracted from its charm. The client chose to keep the existing floor tile as it was in excellent condition. Our challenge was to enhance the space with custom features that would align beautifully with this element.

Building a Board and Batten Wall

A major highlight of the renovation was the addition of a board and batten wall. This classic design choice adds depth and texture, making a striking visual impact.

We carefully measured and cut boards to create well-defined sections. After securing the boards, we installed hooks for towels, marrying functionality with style. This thoughtful addition not only served practical purposes but also became a focal point, allowing for enhanced organization without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.

Painting and Refreshing the Palette

With the board and batten wall set, we shifted our focus to refreshing the color palette. Selecting the right paint color is crucial in any bathroom renovation. It influences the overall mood and coordinates with existing fixtures.

We chose a soft, tranquil shade—like a pale blue or muted green—that harmonized with the existing tile floor while making the space feel more expansive and airy. This fresh coat of paint created a serene backdrop for all other features to stand out, contributing to a cohesive overall look.

Removing the Shower Liner and Tiling

The next step involved removing the old shower liner, which had made the space feel cramped. This change opened up the area significantly. We then began the tiling work, incorporating a custom shower nook—perfect for holding shampoos and soaps. Our client went with classic, white subway tile. This tile has stood the test of time, and brings instant luxury to any space without feeling overwhelming to small areas such as bathrooms.

We chose a geometric tile for the back of the shower niche with coordinating tile colours that added an element of modernism, while still making the space feel cohesive. A tile border helps to elevate this space, giving it a timeless look.

Updating Faucets

Updating the fixtures is key in any bathroom makeover. We explored various styles and finishes for faucets to find a fit that matched the updated look.

Opting for modern designs, matte black and brushed nickel, we installed new faucets that enhanced the aesthetic while ensuring functionality. Our client immediately noticed the difference, as the new hardware provided a sleek, modern feel that worked harmoniously with the overall design. Mixing metals can be a challenging aspect of renovating bathrooms, but our experts were able to help guide the client through selecting cohesive metals and worked well with one another.

Adding Shiplap to the Roof

For a warm touch, we incorporated shiplap on the ceiling. This choice added character while emphasizing the height of the room.

Strategic installation created a balance that drew the eye upward, making the room appear larger. The shiplap not only finished beautifully but also introduced a rustic charm that blended seamlessly with the other elements of the renovation.

Installing New Lighting Fixtures

Lighting is a critical element often overlooked during bathroom renovations. We replaced the old fixtures with new, energy-efficient LED options that offered ample illumination.

The modern fixtures enhanced visibility and contributed to the bathroom’s style. By incorporating a layered lighting approach—combining ambient and task lighting—we ensured the space was both practical for daily tasks and welcoming for relaxation.

Ensuring Cohesion with Existing Tile Floor

Throughout the renovation, we maintained a strong focus on ensuring all updates flowed well with the existing tile floor. This attention to detail was vital in creating a seamless design.

Each choice made, from the color of the paint to the style of fixtures, was in harmony with the tile. The final result was a balanced bathroom where all features supported one another, creating an inviting retreat that feels unified and thoughtfully designed.

Reflections on the Renovation Journey

The transformation of this dated bathroom showcases how intentional renovations can completely reshape a space. By emphasizing cohesive design elements and incorporating distinctive features like a board and batten wall, custom shower nook, and shiplap ceiling, we created a bathroom tailored to meet our client’s needs and aesthetic preferences.

Every thoughtful detail improved functionality and significantly enhanced the overall enjoyment of the space. This renovation journey proves that with quality materials and a clear design vision, any bathroom can undergo a successful transformation.

With careful planning and execution, every bathroom can evolve into a sanctuary—a space that combines beauty, style, and practicality. Embrace the process, and see your outdated bathroom become a modern, inviting haven.
