Creating a custom shop is a significant endeavor, and our recent project in Kelowna exemplified this challenge beautifully. Our client envisioned a space not just for storing his toys, but as a haven where creativity and practicality coexist. This article takes you through our detailed journey from conceptualization to the completion of this unique shop.

Designing the Vision

Every successful project begins with understanding the client's needs. We engaged in deep discussions to pinpoint essential aspects like layout, functionality, and aesthetics. For instance, the client wanted dedicated areas for storage, a workspace, and a cozy lounge.

With this feedback, our team created detailed blueprints. These visuals allowed the client to see the potential layout and made adjustments easy. During this phase, we identified that an open layout would maximize space efficiency, which ultimately contributed to better functionality. We got to work on ensuring proper permits were in place, and began the build.

Excavation and Foundation

With the designs approved, we moved to excavation, carefully digging to prepare for a strong foundation. This step is critical for the shop's longevity, especially with the diverse weather conditions in Kelowna.

Once excavation was complete, we poured concrete for the foundation, ensuring compliance with local building codes. This vital work often goes unnoticed but serves as the backbone of the entire structure. A solid foundation reduces the likelihood of future issues, ensuring the shop will last for years to come.

Framing the Structure

Framing marked an exciting milestone as we began to bring the client's dream to life. Using high-quality lumber, our team constructed the shop's framework. This stage required meticulous measurements to guarantee everything aligned properly.

We kept the client involved, sending regular updates and photos as the bones of the shop emerged. This not only built anticipation but also fostered trust between our team and the client.

Electrical & Heating

Next came the essential task of integrating electrical and heating systems. We installed ample lighting, with LED fixtures throughout the space, ensuring bright, energy-efficient illumination.

In addition, we equipped the shop with a high-efficiency heating system capable of maintaining a comfortable temperature even during Kelowna's colder months. By doing this, we transformed the shop into a practical and welcoming workspace for any time of year.

Insulation

Following the installation of electrical systems, we added insulation, which significantly improves energy efficiency. Proper insulation can lead to energy savings of up to 20%, making the space more sustainable and cost-effective.

Drywall Installation

With the frame up, we moved on to drywall installation, which gave shape to the interior of the shop. The insulation provided by drywall helps in maintaining a consistent climate inside, making the space usable year-round.

Our craftsmen ensured that the drywall was installed with precision, keeping seams smooth and minimizing visible imperfections. By encouraging client feedback, we ensured the finished space met their expectations perfectly.

Painting

After insulation came the selection of colours for painting. We assisted the client to settle on a paint colour that would add to the sleek design of the shop and enhance the natural lighting. After choosing a colour that would enhance the shop, we got to work painting the shop.

Installing Garage Doors

The garage doors we chose were not only functional but also a critical security feature for the client’s valuable collection. We installed overhead doors that provide easy access while accommodating the height and width requirements of the client's toys.

Each door was carefully tested for smooth operation and security, ensuring they were both aesthetically pleasing and reliable.

Storage Solutions

Understanding that a functional shop requires ample storage, we designed a dedicated storage room filled with custom shelves tailored to the client's needs. The shelves were constructed from heavy-duty materials to support a variety of toys and equipment securely.

In our discussions, the client emphasized the importance of organization. Hence, we implemented a design that maximized vertical space, allowing him to efficiently store and access his collections.

Client Collaboration

Throughout this journey, collaboration remained key. Regular check-ins ensured that the client remained informed and involved in every step. This not only fostered a positive relationship but also empowered the client, giving him a sense of ownership over the final product.

Feedback during construction allowed us to make real-time adjustments, enhancing the overall quality of the project. We also assisted the client to help select paint colours and exterior lighting at their request.
